Websites for accountants that qualify the client before the call

Most practice websites list services and invite a chat. Yours will ask what kind of business it is, the turnover band and when the year end falls — so by the time you speak, you already know whether it's worth an hour of your time.

The problem

Referrals are drying up. The website isn't picking up the slack.

Practices have run on word of mouth for decades. It still works — but it doesn't scale, and it doesn't reach the director who has just fallen out with their accountant at 11pm in January.

What happens now
  • Every enquiry becomes a forty-minute discovery call, and half turn out to be sole traders wanting a £150 return.
  • Refusing to publish fees doesn't stop the comparison — it just means it happens without you in the room.
  • The client says yes, then spends three weeks not sending ID. The engagement letter sits unsigned.
  • January buries everything. The busiest month for enquiries is the month you have least time to answer them.
What happens instead
  • The enquiry arrives with business type, turnover band, year end and services needed — you know the fee before you dial.
  • A published "from" price filters the price-shoppers out before they take up an hour of your time.
  • Accepting a quote triggers the AML check automatically. Onboarding starts the day they say yes.
  • Qualifying, acknowledging and booking happen without you. January becomes the month the site earns its keep.

What your enquiry form captures

Qualify in the form, not on the phone

Five fields decide whether an enquiry is a client or a polite decline. Ask them before the conversation, not during it.

Business type
Sole trader, partnership, limited company or charity. Changes the service, the price and the deadlines entirely.
Turnover band
A range, not a number — people will answer a range. Tells you VAT position and whether the fee justifies the work.
Year end
Tells you the urgency and where they sit in your capacity calendar before you commit to anything.
Services needed
Accounts, VAT, payroll, self assessment, bookkeeping, advisory. Multi-select — the combination is the quote.
Current accountant
Whether there's a handover and professional clearance to chase. Silent on most forms, expensive when missed.
Company number
Optional — but if given, we pull the name, incorporation date and filing history from Companies House automatically.
How they heard of you
Tells you within a quarter whether the directory listing or the referral network is actually producing.

The pages

What a practice website actually needs

Seven pages, each with a job. Nothing there to look busy.

01Home
Who you're for, what it costs, and one clear action. Not a stock photo of a handshake.
02Services
Accounts, VAT, payroll, self assessment — each its own section so each can rank separately.
03Industries
Contractors, landlords, e-commerce, trades. Specificity makes a prospect think you understand them.
04Fees
Even a "from" price. Firms that publish fees get fewer enquiries and win more of them.
05Team
Names, qualifications, faces. People hand their finances to a person, not a firm.
06Resources
Deadline calendar, allowance changes, guides. What brings people back before they need you.
07Contact
The qualifying form above, plus a direct route for existing clients.

Questions

What accountants ask us

How much does an accountancy website cost?

Ours are £1,295 or £2,500 depending on size, plus £69 or £89 a month covering hosting, your domain, backups and enquiry delivery. Specialist accountancy marketing agencies typically charge £3,000–£10,000 and often tie you into a twelve-month retainer on top.

All our clients come from referrals. Do we need a website at all?

Referrals still close best — but almost every referred prospect looks you up before making contact. The website's job isn't to replace the referral, it's to survive the check that follows it. A practice site that looks abandoned costs you referred work you never hear about.

Should we publish our fees?

Our honest view: yes, at least a "from" price or a worked example. Firms that publish fees get fewer enquiries and convert far more of them, because the price-shoppers filter themselves out before you spend an hour on them. It's also the single most searched thing about any accountant.

Can it connect to Companies House?

Yes. A prospect enters their company number and the registered name, incorporation date and filing history fill in automatically from the free Companies House API. Less typing for them, and no transcription errors for you.

Can it handle AML and ID checks?

We connect the platform you already use — SmartSearch, Thirdfort, Credas or Amiqus. Accepting a quote can trigger the ID check automatically, so onboarding starts the moment the client says yes rather than three weeks later.

What about GDPR and client confidentiality?

Enquiry data is stored in the UK, with a stated retention period and a deletion route built in from the start. We'll provide the wording for your privacy notice covering what the form collects and why.

Can it cope with January?

That's rather the point. Qualifying happens in the form, acknowledgements go out automatically, and consultations book straight into your calendar with real availability. The month that used to bury you becomes the month the site earns its keep.
